Story Behind Pitrupaksha

Among the stories of Pitru Paksha which are recited while offering Tarpan, the story of Karna is the most told which is being heard since the Mahabharata period. When Karna's soul reached heaven after his martyrdom in the Mahabharata war, he was served food consisting of gold, silver, diamonds and gems. In this case, when Karna asked Indradev the reason for this, Indradev told him that in your lifetime you have donated only gold, silver, diamonds, gems etc. but never donated food and your sons have also been killed in the war of Mahabharata. No one ever donated food etc. for your sake. Then Karan told Indra that he had no knowledge about his ancestors and hence he could never donate anything. Knowing this, Indra gave Karna a chance to correct his mistake and sent him back to earth for 16 days. When Karna returned to earth for 16 days, he remembered his ancestors and offered them as per the rituals and after feeding the Brahmins, he bid them farewell by giving them Dakshina. This period of 16 days is called Pitrapaksha. It is said that from then onwards the process of Shraddha started.

 पितृपक्ष की एक और पौराणिक कथा

According to a mythological story of Pitru Paksha, there were two brothers Joge and Bhoge. Both brothers lived separately but there was a lot of love between them. Joge was very rich and Bhoge was poor. Joge's wife was very proud of her wealth. But Bhoge's wife was very ordinary and simple-hearted. When Pitru Paksha arrived, Joge's wife asked Joge to perform Shraddha for his ancestors, but then Joge tried to avoid it considering it a useless task, but his wife thought that if he did not do so, people would make things and also he would be sent to his maternal house. This seemed like the right opportunity to invite people to a feast and show off her pride, so she said, perhaps you are saying this because of my problem, but I will not have any problem in this, I will call Bhoge's wife, she will help me, both of us. Together we will do all the work. Then he sent Joge to invite his wife. On the call of another joge's wife, Bhoge's wife came early in the morning and got involved in all the work. She prepared the kitchen and prepared many dishes, then after completing all the work she returned to her home, after all she too had to perform Shraddha for her ancestors. On this occasion neither Joge's wife stopped him nor did she stop herself.

It was afternoon when Joge and Bhoge landed on their ancestral land and first of all they went to Joge's place. They saw that at Joge's place his in-laws were busy having dinner. They were disappointed and went to Bhoge's place but there was nothing to eat there. was not. In Bhoge's house, Agiyari was given only in the name of ancestors. The ancestors licked the ashes of the fire and reached the river bank hungry. After some time, all the ancestors gathered and started praising the Shraddha of their respective places. Joge's hungry ancestors also narrated their ordeal and then he started thinking that if he had been capable, perhaps he would not have had to remain hungry. But in Bhoge's house there was not even bread to eat on 2nd June. Thinking all this, he felt pity on Bhoge and suddenly he started dancing and singing and saying "May Bhoge's house become rich, Bhoge's house become rich"!

It must have been evening but still Bhoge's children did not get any food. They said to their mother, "Mother! We are hungry." In order to avoid having children, Bhoge's wife said, 'Go, there is a pond in the courtyard, open it and share and eat whatever you find. When the children reached there, they saw that the trough was full of coins.

He came running to his mother and told her the whole story. Hearing the children's conversation, Bhoge's wife came into the courtyard and saw the basin filled with coins and was surprised. In this way, Bhoge also became rich and after getting the money, when Pitru Paksha came next year, Bhoge's wife prepared 56 types of dishes. He called the Brahmins and performed Shraddha as per the rituals. Provided food and gave Dakshina. The brother-in-law and sister-in-law were served food in gold and silver utensils. The ancestors were very happy and satisfied with this. Just as Bhoge's ancestors blessed him with wealth and grains after performing Shraddha as per the rituals, similarly if a person performs Shraddha for his ancestors during Pitru Paksha, he receives the blessings of his ancestors.
