Why do people whisper into the ears of Nandi ?

Have you ever visited any Shiva temple? If yes, then you must have seen people often whispering into the ears of the Nandi bull.

It is said that if we say our prayers in the ears of the Nandi bull, those prayers definitely reach Lord Shiva.

Now you may ask, “Do our prayers not reach Lord Shiva without whispering in the ears of Nandi?”

 Now we want to answer this question in the form of a story below:

Once, Parvati ji had lost her memory. Lord Shiva was upset because of this.

One day Lord Shiva was meditating with Goddess Parvati.

Nandi Baba decided that he would also meditate with Lord Shiva and he sat down to meditate in front of Lord Shiva. (This is the reason why the idol of Nandi Baba is always in front of Lord Shiva in temples)

Nandi Baba also became engrossed in meditation with Lord Shiva. At the same time, a demon named Jalandhar kidnapped Goddess Parvati. Lord Shiva and Nandi Baba were unaware of this and were meditating.

The gods thought of informing Lord Shiva about this but they did not dare to distract Lord Shiva. He chose Ganesha to convey this news to Lord Shiva. Lord Ganesha tried to bring Lord Shiva out of meditation but he failed and then an idea came to his mind to convey this news to Lord Shiva.

Lord Ganesha went to Nandi the bull and told everything in his ear and requested him to convey this message to Lord Shiva.

 Nandi ji went and told the complete news to Lord Shiva and then Lord Shiva came out of his deep meditation.

Since this incident, till today, this tradition has been going on that if we say our prayer in the ears of Nandi bull, then Nandi Maharaj definitely conveys our prayer to Lord Shiva (even if Lord Shiva is meditating) and Shiva Ji answers the prayers accordingly.

In the song, a poor father prays for his child’s health and asks only for Shiva’s blessings. The words are simple yet full of pure devotion. This song reminds us that Bholenath is always ready to help those who come to him with a true heart, just like Nandi carries our prayers to him.
