Bengali Songs of Kishore Da That I Love
I’ve always been a fan of Kishore Kumar’s Hindi songs, but recently, my JioSaavn app introduced me to a few of his Bengali gems — songs I had never heard before. What followed was a rediscovery of Kishore Da’s magical voice in my mother tongue.
Below are four songs that completely captivated me.
1. Amar Poojar Phool
The first song that appeared in my JioSaavn suggestions was Amar Poojar Phool. Even the title — which translates to “The Flowers of My Worship” — sounded poetic and intriguing.
The song begins at a slow pace, creating a gentle, devotional atmosphere. Kishore Da’s voice blooms beautifully as the melody progresses, with R. D. Burman’s music adding a soulful touch. It’s one of those tracks that make you close your eyes and simply drift with the flow.
2. Ore Mon Pagol (Oh Crazy Heart)
The moment I heard the swarmandal at the start of Ore Mon Pagol, I knew I was going to love it. The song calls out to the heart — a “crazy” one — that keeps chasing luxuries and illusions, forgetting the truth that we arrive in this world empty-handed and leave the same way.
The lyrics beautifully capture this message:
Ore mon pagol tui keno kende moris,(Oh crazy heart, why do you wail and die?)Parosh pathor khojte giye bari bari haarish.(In search of the magical stone, you keep getting defeated.)
Despite its philosophical theme, the melody is deeply soothing, and Kishore Da’s rendition is pure perfection.
3. Amar Ei Kantha Bhore
The next song my app suggested was Amar Ei Kantha Bhore (which means “My Throat is Filled”), and it immediately became one of my favorites. I particularly love how Kishore Da effortlessly transitions to higher notes in the interludes.
Two lines that always give me goosebumps are:
Nijeke lukie rekhe, noyoner adale thekeThakona jatoi sudoore, rekhechi maner gobhire
The emotional depth and the sheer control in Kishore Da’s voice make this song unforgettable.
4. Tomar Badi’r Samne Diye
Then came another gem — Tomar Badi’r Samne Diye. From the very first line, I was hooked.
Tomar badir samne diye, amar maron jatra je din jaabe(The day my final journey passes by your house)Tumi baranda te dariye theko, shesh dekhata dekhte paabe(Stand on your balcony — you’ll witness my final sight)
The low-pitched middle verse in Kishore Da’s voice feels almost magical — melancholy yet deeply satisfying. It’s the kind of song that stays with you long after it ends.
Discovering these four songs — Amar Poojar Phool, Ore Mon Pagol, Amar Ei Kantha Bhore, and Tomar Badi’r Samne Diye — has been a beautiful musical journey for me. Each one showcases a different shade of Kishore Kumar’s artistry, from devotional calm to philosophical reflection and romantic melancholy.
I’m grateful to my JioSaavn app for unearthing these treasures for me — and I can’t wait to explore more of Kishore Da’s Bengali classics.
