Opening Scene of the Movie Mausam
I finally got the chance to watch the movie Mausam starring Sanjeev Kumar and Sharmila Tagore a few weeks ago. I had earlier watched it from the mid and somehow found it to be a simple story picturised in a very simple and natural manner.
The movie opens with Sanjeev Kumar playing the role of a retired doctor who goes to a hill station to spend some days. He reaches the guest house and a few of his friends come to meet him. Sanjeev Kumar is shown in a very sober role in the opening who speaks very little.
The Plot in Simple Words
After a few days he starts his quest. The quest was to find the whereabouts of a lady whom he knew a long time ago.
As the story moves ahead and he explores the places of the hill station, we come to know that he earlier was in love with a woman played by Sharmila Tagore whose father was a Vaidya (Ayurvedic Doctor). Sanjeev Kumar met Sharmila Tagore on the road when he had got injured and she took him to her father for first aid treatment. Sanjeev Kumar was studying medicine at that time.
Now when Sanjeev Kumar has grown old he comes back to find the old Sharmila Tagore but eventually finds a woman who looks like Sharmila Tagore and works as a prostitute. He is stunned to find the woman in this condition. Then Sanjeev Kumar starts meeting her and comes to know that she was the daughter of his love. He gets very sad to know that his love Sharmila Tagore had died and her daughter is in such a bad situation.
Sanjeev Kumar also feels bad as he could not do anything for his love. He then plans to bring the daughter of Sharmila Tagore to his home and make her life better and eventually succeeds in this.
Why I Love This Movie
I love this movie because the story telling in the movie is really so soothing, slow and lovely. In this fast paced world where people get bored of 2 minute Instagram reels, watching such slow paced movies work like magic.
Songs of Mausam
The songs and music part of the movie is so lovely too. A very popular song Dil Dhoondta Hai Phir Wohi Fursat Ke Raat Din belongs to this movie. The song is sung by Bhupinder Singh and Lata Mangeshkar. Bhupinder Singh has also sung the slow version of this song.
Here is the complete list of songs in simple language:
| Song Title | Singer(s) | Simple Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dil Dhoondta Hai Phir Wohi Fursat Ke Raat Din (Sad version) | Bhupinder Singh | Slow, emotional version. Plays in the opening credits. |
| Dil Dhoondta Hai Phir Wohi Fursat Ke Raat Din (Happy version) | Lata Mangeshkar & Bhupinder Singh | Popular romantic duet. Picturised on Sanjeev Kumar and Sharmila Tagore. |
| Chhadi Re Chhadi | Lata Mangeshkar & Mohammed Rafi | Light and playful duet on the lead pair. |
| Mere Ishq Mein Laakhon Jhatke | Asha Bhosle | Lively dance number. |
| Ruke Ruke Se Qadam | Lata Mangeshkar | Soft solo mainly on Sharmila Tagore. |
Music by Madan Mohan | Lyrics by Gulzar | Background score by Salil Chowdhury
Direction by Gulzar
The movie is brilliant maybe because it is directed by Gulzar.
